Early June the Faulkner boys were at it again at another community event. This event was to help boy scouts earn the maintenance portion of their cycling badge. We had a small number of scouts show up for the event, which was held at the back of the Newport Public Library in Newport, PA. It was actually nice because we got to work one-on-one with the scouts. Brian was working with a boy named Eli who was riding a bike with a pretty awful back wheel. It was obvious Eli was unable to ride this bike. After the event Brain couldn't get that out of his head and became determined to get Eli a bike that he could actually ride. Brian's neighbor was getting rid of a kids BMX bike and Brain claimed it pretty quickly. With a little tune-up the bike was ready to roll. Brain and Denise went up to Newport to deliver the bike to an extremely excited Eli!

2007 Season

...Has come and gone. Ryan and Jason went on the record as being unsure of form being the first race of the year and Carney just smiled and said the field will split up. The race was 6 laps (42 miles) over a rolling seven mile course with light wind. The first few laps were peppered with a few solo attacks but everything came back pretty quickly. It didn’t appear that any one team was specifically chasing. Around mid-race, Carney attacked. I later found that he wanted to get his “training intensity” in. Funny, I was getting more then my share of early season “intensity” just sitting on wheels… Carney stayed away for a little over a lap and it took some pretty good chasing to bring him back. With a lap and a half to go and Ryan monitoring the front, the rest of us planned to attack-counter-attack-counter, etc. on the back section of the last lap. With about 5 miles to go, Carney brought Nate to the front and off he went. Nate proved that saving him for the last lap was a good idea because he got a pretty good gap right away. It took a lot of hard chasing to finally bring him back right before the final sprint. Given that I (Jason) got popped with about 2k to go, I can’t comment on the dynamics of the sprint.

It appears that we will have a strong team this year. Three solo breaks got away from the field in the race – two of them were our guys (Nate and Carney). The blocking consisted of slowing the field down through the corners and riding in the front of the field and intentionally letting gaps open in attempt to send additional riders to the breaks. I think we rode well as a team and it was pretty easy to communicate with everyone. After seeing Carney and Nate off the front solo, I think that in the future, we should only send two or more guys up the road at a time – meaning that we should give each other a heads up or at least ride near each other in the field. The end result may have been a lot different if either of you had help from any strong motors. I’m not sure that we have a team that can consistently place in the sprints, but I think that we can do some real damage by sending multiple riders up the road at the same time.

I will go on record saying that I’m looking forward to more racing with all of you. I think that we can get some good results based on how everyone rode on Saturday.

Jason

Winter is here....?

Yet another 50 degree Saturday ride today....No complaints here. A big ol' group met at the former RiverRoom-now-pizza-joint location on Front Street. I don't know, maybe 12 of us? Some newer faces (and teammates) in the group - Nathan. Good strong addition to the team - don't have allot of info on him just yet; just know he rides a ton, used to live in Tennessee, and is currently a professor at Shipp U.

Lets see...who else was out there today - Nate Deibert, back from Spain....Mike Hebe, fresh off an impressive 10th in the 40+ race @ Cyclocross nationals....Ray Tasker-track racer guy.......40! YEAR OLD Rife.....Flyin' Ryan Sohmer.......straight outta Philly Johann.....Carney.....TV personality Scott Sanderson.....look at my sweet carbon Fetish-Andrew........Dwayne-my Stillers suck this year-Williamson.....and me - the dad-to-be bringing up the back, literally. Yep, all of those guys I just listed off, except for me, are in some great winter form at the moment....... Me on the other hand, well, I faked it pretty well for about two hours, but that third hour was pretty rough. I'll learn to live with it - for now. I'm way too excited about having a little boy in about 12 days to be worried about my fitness.

Held a team meeting after the ride at ABC.....Peters told war stories from his morning duck hunt - I don't know...the whole duck hunting thing sounds waaay to challenging for me. The whole sitting in a bogg, calling in a duck and shooting it with a shotgun thing.....yep, too tough for me. Haha......just kidding. In fact Peters was nearly attacked by a wild swann and a great blue heron today.....too risky for me out there...

We did discuss a few team related things in the meeting....# 1 was the agreement and welcoming of nathan (sorry man, don't even know your last name yet) to the team. As I mentioned above - definitely looks to be a good addition...and he was sitting at ABC at 2 in the afternoon....although I think he was without beer - we'll have to work on that one.

Team race - Faulkner Honda Hummelstown Criterium will be held on the first Saturday after the 4th of July - which, I believe, is July 7th in '07. Definitely looking forward to the event and working with Hummelstown again this year. What a great town and community. Can't wait to see how the folks come out to support the race this year...

T-shirts this year...we're going to have them made....between Boland and myself, we'll get something worked out. Ought to be good...

Oh yeah...speaking of Scott Boland...he's another new addition to the team....I think anyhow - has he been on a ride yet??? Joking, joking...... Boland used to follow me around Lambs Gap on the mtn bike back in the day, until he started passing me...then I quit riding with him. He raced a good season while living in Savannah, GA and now that he's settled back here in H'burg we offered him a spot on the team. Oh wait...he didn't have a beer at the meeting today either...what is up with that?

Alright, enough of my ramblings here tonight.....Its been way too long since I've updated the site. Hope to do a bit better of a job this year. Well heck...there's my New Year's resolution: Keep this blog updated.

Have a great (and safe) New Year's celebration.

Artist?

Andrew singing "the my insurance company is taking forever to get me new bike blues"

Tour De Toona

Ok so I was waiting on the website to post a pic of Carney getting his beer mug but that still isn't up. Johann, Carney, Ryan and I headed to Toona where Carney and I saw Michael Jackson doing his famous moon walk. I know I couldn't believe it either Jacko in a Hooters he had to be there for the food. Friday's race was a lovely day in the pouring down rain with 100 racers trying to stay upright. With in the first mile there was a crash where some dude cracked his fork right in half. The Faulkner boys were staying close to the front and out of danger. That was until 500 meters to go. I was second wheel when the dude in front of me crashed. Don't know how, don't know why but of course I had the luck and went down with him. Ryan ended up finishing a strong 7th and we knew what we had to do on Saturday.
The road race was 70 miles with 3 climbs in it and 4 Faulkner guys in it. The secret is the Shiner Bock because the Faulkner boys had a hell of a day. Carney, Ryan and Johann found themselves in the front group while I was taking a shit in some nice ladies house. I left the fan on! carney attacked and got up to the lone yellow jersey and came home with second, Ryan got 5th and Johann 7th. It was a great day and not tomorrow it set up the boys to get on the podium for the weekend. Strong day Congrats to all three of you.
The crit was a fast technical course. You had to survive it between the people bonking from the hard races the past to days and the crashes. Ryan did just that and come home with 6th. Not a bad weekend at all a 5th, 6th and 7th in one of the hardest cat 3 fields out there. A 5th over all for the man and Carney following in 6th and Johann in 11th. A great weekend for the boys in blue and we had a hell of a weekend.

Bloomsburg

I am a tall dude but Johann your a Giant

This Weekend for FHR

3 Top tens, 2 days of racing, 1 Hell of a Night. That pretty much wraps up the weekend. It started off strong as Carney, Ryan, Scott and I lined up to tackle Mt. Nebo. Carney took a huge pull at the front and shattered the pack and the hopes of many riders. Ryan and Scott were sitting pretty and ended up with a 6th and 9th on the day. Good job boys! Carney finished 18th and well we won't talk about my day of "racing."
After a fun night at the Pubs Christmas in July party. I got plenty of sleep under the rug. Rife, Johann and I went up to good ol Bloomsburg for a fast 4 corner crit. The word of the day was ATTACK! Johann and I just kept attacking and getting in some breaks but riders wouldn't work together or the peleton would ramp it up and chase us down. A two man break stayed away because no one wanted to pull until 3 laps to go and it was too little too late. Rife found himself in good position coming down to the final corner and that's when I saw Johann come up on my left. I lined up behind him and was in a great position except for that mud as I don't know how we didn't go down but I guess it will have to be Toona next week for us. Rife got 10th and I did win a water bottle and a cage. Sure beats our race with all those helmets, tires and good prizes.
Great weekend for the boys in blue and for Floyd. That was a great tour and I hate to say it but I told you all Floyd would win the tour. Before the scandal and his signature looks good on the back of the Faulkner vest.
Toona this weekend, it should be fun.

Peters Pub Crew

GO FLOYD

Yesterday Floyd broke our heart but today what an effort. You just don't see that anymore in cycling, AWSOME! Did you see the rage he was riding with too, God look at after he finished he didn't need anybody guards when he pushed everybody out of his way. The TT should be a great day and what a tour to watch.
I remember Lil John (Yeah.....Ok) getting me to sign up on this a while ago but for some reason never helped out with the site. Just to let everyone know this is Josh. This weekend should be fun as most of the Faulkner Boys will be lining up for Nebo which well Nebo is Nebo plain and simple. Should be a fun intresting race and I'll say it I know there will be Blue on the front on the last climb. Then on Sunday Rife, Johann, and I will be doing the Bloomsburg crit. I don't know much about the course but it should play out pretty well. This weekend coming up will be a busy one and hopefully I'll remember to get this blog cookin again and keep everyone up to date.

Marshall's Tour de France Game Returns

It’s that time of the year again. For those of you who played last year, the rules are the same. It works like this:

The rules:

Each director sportif (you) gets 25 units of a fictitious currency to select a team.

You pick 9 riders with those 25 salary units.

The riders’ salaries are listed below.

Any rider not listed costs 1 unit.

Riders on your team are timed and receive bonus times as follows:

The scoring:

The flat road stages (all stages other than those listed in next paragraph) will be based on time bonuses only. The top ten in each stage receive bonus times of 2:00, 1:30, 1:15, 1:00, :50, :40, :30, :20, :10, :05, respectively.

The mountain stages and the time trials will be based on the actual time of your top three riders on each stage. These stages are the Prologue (TT), stage 7 (TT),10,11,15,16,17,19 (TT). There is no team time trial this year.

Make sure you have at least 3 riders who can finish the tour or you will be a DNF.

The team winner on GC will be decided based on the lowest total time.

I’ll post updated standings via email on a regular basis. Entries are due by 5:00PM, Friday, June 30. The tour starts Saturday, July 1st. Spouses, etc. may enter teams, but only if they actually follow the race and make their own picks. I reserve the right to reject entries. Include your name and your team name with your entry of 9 riders (who cost no more than 25). Please, no entries before Wednesday, June 28th, as I have not yet picked my own team. It was an amazing day out - 70 degrees I think - what a day to race.

On Sunday Rife and I ventured out to Phili - through all the traffic and the fake accident ( I wonder if the cop is still out threre?) - and we did the crit through Fairmont Park. I dont know if it was the rain, but damn, everybody was cocky. From calling us the 'Faulkner Honda Ladies' over the loud speaker, to some team saying "thats right, look at us" during our warm up.

It was a smooth race with no breaks getting away. Rife and I stayed toward the front to stay out of danger but not burn ourselves out. We raced smart. On the last lap, with about a quarter mile to go, I was leading (but not really hammering it) when I decided to go out on a flyer. I figured if I didn't get away, it would at least string things out for the sprint. Well, coming up the hill I realized I gapped the entire pack and came across the line for the big "W". Rife sprinted in for 5th. Not a bad start to the season, huh guys? The cool down lap turned into Rife and I partying the whole way. Needless to say Greg's coach who called us the ladies before the race didnt have much to say. 2nd yesterday and a 1st and 5th today - Johnny boy, get that blog cookin.

Josh"

The blog is cookin', Josh.....

First Top 10 of '06 and a new rider on the Team...

A whole 11 days into March and Josh Brand takes home a 2nd place in the 11 mile Red Rose Races Lancaster time trial. Josh has put in a nice winter of training so he's ready for the great early season racing - looks like he's definitely on the right track. In addition, he and Brian Rife are heading to Philly tomorrow for the first crit of the year.

FHR has added a new rider to the team for '06 - Andrew Monroe. Andrew has been riding in the area for years, a friend of many of us from the old Team Harrisburg days. Saturday will be the standard team ride from the elementary school on Linglestown Road. Count on two to three hours of good base mileage. Not like last Saturday's good, but way too intense ride from Rife's. Don't get me wrong, I'm all about a good, fast training ride, but that's maybe not such a good idea in the middle of January! Slow, slow, slow.......that's the way....

Anyhow -

Ride start: 10 am

2006 is Here

With the 2005 season and its successes fueling Faulkner Honda Racing, the Team is rolling into the new year with fitness and loads of motivation. The great 2006 team kits, made by Nalini, have already arrived and winter base training is in full effect. After the great team ride last weekend, its apparent that the Team is dedicated and ready to bring home great results again this year.

One big change for the Team this year revolves around the Faulkner Honda Criterium. For the past five years, the race has been a tradition on the second weekend in July around the streets of Harrisburg. The race will continue - taking place on Saturday, July 8th - but the location of this year's event will be new. All new course, all new town.

Hummelstown, Pennsylvania has accepted the concept of the Faulkner Honda Criterium with open arms and will be the host of this year's race. Holding true to the unique and challenging course in Harrisburg, the Hummelstown course will be a bit shorter (at less than a mile), but will pack no less than 8 corners into the loop with a perfect wide-open and long finishing straight. Should prove for a great day of racing.

Other team news -

Team photos were taken last weekend and will get posted soon.

Saturday Team rides are rolling out every weekend @ 10am.

2006 racing schedule is beginning to take shape. Lots of great races are on the calendar for this season.

2005 Season Review

Faulkner Honda Racing, FHR, is an amateur men’s Category 3and 4 bicycle racing team comprised of riders from Central Pennsylvania that compete primarily in the PA BAR (Pennsylvania Best All-around Rider) competition.

2005 was a terrific year for the Team. Race victories, numerous top 10 finishes, and the individual award for the Best All-around Rider in Pennsylvania for Category 3 all belong to the Team as the year comes to a close. The individual PA BAR award, won by John Cameron, can be attributed to the total TEAM effort of each rider throughout the long racing season.

Mike Peters, Mr. Team Director himself, provided the Team with support throughout the entire season, even making appearances at several races to shout out commands and advice to the Team. In addition, he, his wife Patricia, along with the Team and dozens of volunteers pulled off another successful Faulkner Honda Harrisburg Criterium. The event attracted hundreds of racers and raised more than $15,000 for PA CASA. Without Mike’s vision, the Race nor the Team would exist.

The Young Gun, Josh Brand, a first year rider on the Team, had a terrific season. Upgrading to Category 4 this year, Josh had great results in both Cat. 4 and Cat. 3 races alike. He has shown true grit to survive tough races of attrition and that he has the speed to win a bunch sprint at the end of a criterium. Look for big things from Josh in 2006.

John Cameron was honored to bring home the PA BAR award for Category 3 this year. With the Team’s dedication in getting John to the finish safely in many races this year, winning the award was the least he could do to thank the Team for their hard work and sacrifice.

With Mike Carney on the Team, FHR had a distinct advantage over their competition in 2005. They had the strongest rider in the Category 3 peloton on their squad. He rode hard for the Team all season, but still scored some great results for himself. Mike finished 2nd at the Dave Wollet Criterium, in the Top 10 several times, and 6th over-all in the PA BAR competition.

Johann Liljengren, now a PENN senior, spent the summer on internship at the Capitol Complex in Harrisburg. In a chance meeting with Mike Peters, Johann was invited to ride with the Team. In no time at all, Johann’s incredible late race surges were helping FHR finish strong. He was a one-man lead out train, exemplified no better than in the Cargas Criterium when he pulled John, Scott and Brian around to the finish, sending them across the line in 2nd, 4th, and 7th.

One of the most improved riders on the Team in ’05 had to be Steve Reed. Steve committed to a new training program this year that had him
focus on building endurance at a much lower intensity than he was used to. Coming from a past of only riding fast ALL of the time, this was a big change for him. Now after almost a solid year of hard work, Steve is ready to see the results in 2006.

Brian Rife had a great 2005 season with several top 10 finishes. With his years of road racing experience and BMX racing speed, Brian could always find ways to get himself into contention at the end of a race. His ability to effortlessly move around in the pack was a terrific example for all the Team to follow - if they could hold his wheel…

Alex Roberts latched himself onto early moves in races all through the season, making sure FHR was represented in everything. His early race aggression lead to John’s victory in the Grandview Criterium. Alex alertly took John to the front of the pack just as the winning break-away was forming. Even after his common early race efforts, Alex was able to finish almost every race he started in ’05.

The Team could always count on Marshall Sacks, the Cyclopedia and Master Tactician, for advice leading up to a race. From his years of racing experience he could take the Team through every scenario possible before an event and critique their performance afterwards.

As Scott Sanderson was riding himself into form this season, an unfortunate injury derailed the remainder of his year. Scott scored top 5 finishes in both running and riding races through the spring and early summer, but a nagging IT Band problem forced him off the bike for several weeks in July. Since then, Scott has shifted his focus to rehabbing the knee and working towards a strong 2006 season.

Ryan Sohmer got the Team’s season started with strong results in both the grueling Turkey Hill Country Classic (4th) and the White Rose Circuit Race (2nd). Those efforts certainly boosted Team confidence leading into June. Unfortunately, Ryan’s season came to a halt with back problems that kept him from racing through the thick of the season. Incredibly, even with no racing for three months, Ryan was able to return to the scene and compete with the best through late August and September.

Team race victories, Team Top 10’s, and a PA BAR Champion for the Team in ‘05 – Things are looking good for ‘06.

Final 2005 PA BAR Rankings

CATEGORY 3
Place - Rider - Team - Points
1. Carney, Cameron, Josh, Rife, Alex, Ryan, and Johann took part in the day's racing, with Young Gun Josh mixing it up in both the Category 4 and the Category 3&4 races.

Josh rode a good, solid Category 4 race, remaining towards the front and out of trouble for much of the 30-lap affair. With the uphill finish coming only 150 meters from the last corner, Josh learned quickly that it was imperative to be on the front before the home stretch. He came through that last corner in 4th wheel and fought his way into third, running out of real estate before the line. Great third place though.

One race later, we all lined up for the 35-lap Category 3&4 race, including the super confident Josh. It was a good hard race with all on the team working hard on the front to string it out. First to apply pressure was Ryan, constantly attacking and chasing moves. Cameron put in several hard moves finally sneaking away with two others with 22 laps to go. The three worked together nicely, but the charging pack had too much horsepower for the move to stay away. 6 laps later, it was all back together and new attacks were coming. Again, Ryan came to the front and put the hurt on the pack followed by tough pulls by Carney. The peleton was beginning to string out in pain when a group started to form off the front. Josh was in prime position and bridged right up, quickly finding himself in the winning 6-man break. The break worked together well and chiseled out a 17-second lead with only 5 laps remaining. With constant attacks from the main pack, their lead fell to 11 seconds with 3 to go, but the break kept working and held off the field. Josh sprinted to a terrific 3rd place - his best result to date in a Category 3 race. Meanwhile, back in the shrinking pack, Carney snuck off the front with two laps to go and held it to the line for a well deserved 7th. The rest of FHR stayed safe in the chaotic sprint with Cameron taking the last money spot for 12th.

To finish off an already great day, Cameron solidified his lead in the PA Best All Around Rider Competition and earned the Trophy, PA BAR Champion Jersey, and free entry into all of next year's races. All of it made possible by the great teamwork of FHR in 2005. What a year and what a great way to finish it off...

Race Pictures Category 4
Race Pictures Category 3/4

A 2nd @ Gino's Duathlon

Posted by John

I headed down to Codorus State Park last Sunday, Sept. 11th, to try my first duathlon - Gino's Race, a duathlon to benefit the ALS Society (Lou Gehrigs Disease). All the proceeds from the event are donated to the ALS Association, Greater Philadelphia Chapter in memory of Gene Gladfelter. Another good race for a great cause...

The race: A 2 mile road run, followed by a 14 mile road bike loop, finishing with another 2 mile road run. I was able to check out the course the weekend before so I knew it was going to be a hilly affair, no record speeds in this event!

100 or so participants set off for the first 2 miles. Fast. There were some guys that were really flying, but I knew if I kept them in sight they would come back during the bike leg. I accomplished that goal and came into the first transition in 5th place, with only one racer already out of sight.

I had a pretty good transition and set off on the bike leg of the course. Within the first mile, I passed all but one racer and found myself in second position - and I felt pretty good too. For the remainder of the hilly ride, I just kept it steady, trying not to exert too much energy as to have a little left for the final run. Never did see the first placed racer...

Came in to the second transition, quickly lost the bike and helmet, and tossed on the running shoes. No one was pressuring me from behind, so I pretty much ran the final two miles at my own pace - not overly hard, but by no means was it easy. I had a nice little cramp that made the last ten minutes rather uncomfortable, but I made it through to finish a solid 2nd place in 1 hr. 3min. - almost 4 minutes ahead of the third placed racer.

Jeff Miller (2005 Category 1/2 PA Time Trial Champ) won the event in just under one hour. Ouch.

Great event and I will definitely return again. Hope it continues to grow!

SPONSOR APPRECIATION RIDE - OCTOBER 1st

Posted by Mike Peters -

On Saturday, October 1st at 11 AM, the Faulkner Honda Racing Team will have a special Team ride with our sponsors as a way to show them how much we appreciate their support. RAY WERTZ MEMORIAL "RIDE TO READ" BIKE TOUR FUNDRAISER on SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2005, 7AM-5PM (Rain or Shine!). The event supports the Newport Public Library.

Our own Scott Sanderson is quite involved with the organization of this ride and he has seen the growth of the event first hand. In just five years "Ride to Read" has grown from 8 cyclists raising $2000 to last year's 156 riders raising $7000! Mike Peters, Scott and I had a great time on the ride last year.

Contact any one of us on the team if you would like to meet up for the ride.

For additional information and directions go to:
RIDE TO READ

Winding Down, but Not Finished.

Upcoming races for FHR include:

Sept. 10th - Pine Grove Furnace Time Trial

Sept. 11th - Gino's Duathlon

Sept. 25th - Right From the Start Criterium (final PA B.A.R.race)

Oct. 15th - Off Road Duathlon, Run-Bike-Run

Oct. 29th - Great Pumpkin Chase 5k Run

One BAR race to go....

Updated PA B.A.R. We all had different goals for the race - Ryan and Scott wanted to give it a go after battling nagging injuries all season, Josh wanted to let loose on the Cat. 4's, Carney wanted a high placing in the 3's, and I just wanted to hit that magic number 13 and finish 13th or better to move me into the lead for the season long PA B.A.R. competition.

I was first to head off - I felt better than I have all week, but a long season of racing is taking its toll on me and I just didn't have the snap in my legs to post a great time. I kept it rolling though, knowing that Carney was starting only two minutes behind me. Carney had a great ride, closing in on his minute man after only 5 miles and getting me in his sights early on. I managed to hold a charging Carney off until the last kilometer, but sure enough, he came charging past me heading into the final climb to the finish.
Carney: 46 min. 39 sec.
Cameron: 48:38

No matter what Ryan says about his performance, it was truly impressive. The guy has had severe back problems all season and he hasn't raced his bike since early May - somehow he's managed to stay fit and motivated all summer and pulled out a very respectable 48:49.

Scott's ride was another frustrating addition to an already frustrating season. His right leg (IT band issues possibly) started acting up about halfway through the race - at one point hitting him with more pain than he'd ever experienced before. Understandably, Scott shut it down and just finished the race with no concern about his time.

Josh rifled off a nice 49:38 - CUTTING A FULL 5 MINUTES off his time from last year. Nice. Not a bad improvement at all in just one year!

Overall the team should be quite happy with its performance in this tough race.
Cat 3/4:
5th - Carney (tied for 10th OVERALL)
11th - Cameron (10th PA resident)
12th - Sohmer
17th - Sanderson

Cat 4:
6th - Brand

Full Results

Updated PA B.A.R. He was the lone FHR rider in the event, but still brought home a great 2nd place.

Carney's Report:
For the Category 3/4 race, it was pretty much Brian Smith (World Cup) and I at the front the whole time. After 15 laps a couple of World Cup guys took a flyer with Brian and I on the front. We caught them going through the 3rd corner and just rode through them. It was Brian, a Dutch Wheelman, a SBRT rider and me. There were a bunch of SBRT guys in the race along with World Cup and they were massed at the front. With them blocking, we just rode away. I had to keep encouraging the SBRT guy to stay with us since he had a whole team behind us blocking. With 6 to go, the Dutch Wheelman and SBRT guys were having a hard time staying with us. We waited for the SBRT guy, but he came off for good with 5 laps to go. It was Brian and I alone to the end of the race and Brian took me pretty easy for the sprint.

As for the 1/2/3 race, it was immediately after the 3/4 race. I had 3 water bottles for the race and 15 miles into it I had them done - and still had 20 more miles to go. During the race I was on the wheel of Mike Miller when he made his winning attacks - I mean "attacks" as Mike Miller and Joe Papp's teammate lapped the field TWICE. Other guys also broke away from the field, but I could only watch them go. I just hung on the back and tried to not think of water. With 10 laps to go I saw Sez sitting in the shade drinking some Gatorade talking to a smoking Red head. That just about did it for me, but I stuck it out and w/ two laps to go Sez yells at me that I could still get in a money spot. I was just holding on for dear life as they wound it up on the back stretch - I just held on to finish 19th. I felt like hell the whole way home - until I got some of Patti's food in me at Peters' Pub. With 100+ temps, it definitely wasn't a good race to run out of water.

"W"

FHR was able to bring home its first road win of the season on Saturday at the Grandview Heights Criterium. Carney, Rife, Josh, Alex, Scott and I saddled up for one of the last races of the season - and we were greeted by the warmest weather of the summer. 97 degrees with heat indices ten degrees warmer. HOT.

As we had heard, the Grandview course was a good one - a seven corner, one mile loop through a terrific little Lancaster neighborhood. Residents were out in force cheering on all of the riders - some even had cardboard cutouts of Lance, dressed up blow-up dolls, and thankfully a few homes had nice sprinkler systems (hoses) shooting out onto the street for us to ride through and cool off a bit.

This race has been won by Danny Fry of Lancaster Brewing for the last two years - his secret to success was to attack early and start an early break. A move like that could quickly get out of sight of the pack because of all the corners around the course. Knowing that, we had to be ready for such a move. Although Fry wasn't in attendance, two of his teammates, Justin Waynick and Sez, were. Sure enough, on the second lap of the 22 lap race, two riders attacked the field. With a quick move, Alex pulled me to the front of the group and launched me right up to the leaders. Justin came with and just like that, a group of 5 were off the front. In the next few laps our lead grew, but not by much. The five of us in the break were working together quite well and we were confident the move would stick, that is if the heat didn't kill us.

The Break forms

Meanwhile, back in the main pack, Josh, Rife, Alex, Scott and Carney had made their way to the front and were shutting down any attempts from riders trying to close the gap to the break. With 12 laps to go in the race, our breakaway group had chiseled out a 35 second lead - still a small gap with that far to go, so we pressed on, each taking equal turns to increase our lead. At 9 laps to go, one of our breakaway companions couldn't hold the pace and fell out of the group, so it was down to four of us. We continued to take equal turns at the front and with 6 laps to go our lead over the pack had grown to over a minute.

FHR on the Front and Blocking

It was time for me to start thinking about the finish of the race. I knew I wanted to attack our group before the finish to try to get away solo or at least shed another rider or two. With four laps to go, I rolled up next to Justin and asked him if he wanted to put in an attack to try to drop the other two riders - He was up for it, so approaching the end of that lap, Justin shifted down and jumped hard. Anticipating the move, I was right on his wheel and pulled through to keep the pace good and high. Success - we immediately dropped one of our group and it was down to three.
Now it was really time to figure out my finish, with only a trio left I really wanted to take this win. All three of us remaining seemed equally strong, so I didn't want to gamble with a solo move. It was all going to come down to the sprint and I knew I wanted to start it from the back, hopefully catching the others off guard. That was my plan and I stuck to it. Heading into the final corner of the race, I drifted back off the other two riders, letting a ten yard gap open. As we rounded the last corner entering the home straight, Justin put in a quick attack to lure us into leading it out. As soon as he sat back into his saddle and the pace slowed, I went - taking both by surprise.
Head down and in the 53x12 I rolled to the finish for the win.

It was awesome to win this one - not so much for myself, but for the team. We've all been working so hard this year as a team - we definitely deserved a victory.

Tour de Christiana

Josh, Reed, Carney, and I survived our marathon weekend of racing at the Tour de Christiana, August 6th and 7th. 82 category 3/4 riders took the start line.

Road race was one decided mostly by attrition, as it was a five lap, 43 mile race, around a rolling loop with two tough climbs each lap. Carney and I made it through the race, but neither of us quite knew how to finish it off - Carney finished 11th, I was right ahead of him in 9th and that's how we stood in the points race after stage one.

Sunday morning's Individual Time Trial greeted us all w/ rain and lovely manure on the roads from the horses of the Amish prevalent in the area. Another difficult course, the ITT was to be won by someone able to keep momentum up and over the rolling hills around the 10 mile loop. Josh tackled the course first, followed by Carney, Reed, and finally me. We all agreed afterwards that we felt like crap during the event - but somehow I managed a 16th place finish. Earning some more points towards the overall, but dropping me to 11th overall after stage two.
TT Results:
Cameron, 16th: 0:23:31
Carney, 25th: 0:24:27
Brand, 28th: 0:24:30
Reed, 55th: 0:26:03

After a good lunch at a Paradise Diner, it was off to the afternoon Criterium in the center of Christiana. Our race was rather short, at only 14 laps, or about 18 miles - but I was super thankful it wasn't any longer when the gun went off. The first 5 laps of the race were flying and I was doing everything I could to just stay in. Carney was up front making guys suffer as usual. Somehow, a group of three escaped off the front - even with the high speeds. Nothing I could do about it, so I just sat in waiting for my legs to come around. Finally, with a few laps to go I was able to comfortably position myself towards the front of the group, but I didn't have the energy to attack and try to chase down the breakaway - I had to be content with a high placing without the win. Carney was doing his best to recruit some help at the front to pull back the break, but no one was willing. Coming out of the last corner, I was sitting 5th wheel and just started my sprint as soon as the road straightened out. To my surprise I blew by the guys in front of me and had no one challenge me from behind, finishing first from the group and 4th for the race. Carney cruised in with what was left of the pack.
With my 4th placing in the Crit, I moved all the way up to 4th Overall for the race. Carney finished 24th Overall.
Tough weekend of racing for sure...

Next up - Grandview Heights Criterium in Lancaster. A crash at the end made for placings that we should not have gotten. The overall is that they did a great job at making 40+ guys suffer so bad they were woozy coming up that hill after they fell off, and about 30 or so guys did just that.

Reed and Roberts covered some early jumps. When the first 2 laps or so ended, the pack was still completely together. The blue train at the front looked great and the pace was wickedly high. The interesting thing is that when the peleton came up the hill to the start/finish line, the whole thing was completely together each lap - They were strung out single file quite a few times, but still together. Anyway, about a third of the way through the race, you would see 2 or 3 guys off the back each lap, until the last 3 laps had only about 15 guys left. The only real group off the back of the peleton contained Alex, Sez, and 3 or 4 other guys. For awhile Alex's group was only a minute or so off the back. Unfortunately for Alex, the peleton just kept getting faster.

In the end we had Carney, Cameron, and Brand coming into the last lap, Johan had come off a few laps before that. Somewhere on the false flat near the finish, Josh made a good move as people were jockeying for position coming up toward the hill for the last time. As Josh was caught though, Mike Whitaker stood up and Cameron reacted as his wheel came back. John bumped his wheel (Cameron's front to Whitaker's back) and started to fall to the left. John managed to stay up, but because of the major swerve guys behind braked hard, causing 3 of them to go down - Carney included. Due to the crash, the front group split in half w/ John up front and Josh chasing back on. At the end, John went for the sprint but was in just too low of a gear to get better than 4th. The move was good but I think John's mind was back on Carney hitting the ground. Josh finished strong in 6th.

An exciting race all in all.

So Yo Co Sunday

This Sunday Reed, Alex, Carney, Johann, Josh, and I will be racing in the Southern York County Circuit Race. Touch little course as its all uphill or down - not a flat section on the 2.5 mile loop. Our race begins at 10:30am and is 15 laps long (37.5 miles). At the moment, the category 3-4 field isn't all that big, so this race will definitely not come down to a huge field sprint - and with any luck, FHR will be well represented at the finish.

For race info and directions, head to:
SoYoCo Race Flyer

And the WINNER of the FHR Jersey Is.....

Me. I came off on the last lap. I would chase back on only to get dropped on the climb. Mike Whitacker dropped out on the last lap (2004 winner). The race was just flying. I didn't know any of the guys in the lead group, but there were a lot of strong riders in the field. I finished 14th. The guy that won, I think, is the guy who won last year's 4/5 race. He had a minute on what was left of the pack at the finish. Not sure when he went off the front as we caught two guys that were out there w/ less than two laps to go. Thought we had everyone back at that point, but the lead car was no where to be seen, so it turned out the guy stayed away to the finish... "
Josh and Rife toughed it out and finished the race. When I came to the tour this year as a rookie there were many doubts from the others about my team. I think we proved to everybody that the strongest team always wins. Special thanks to our team captain, Mr. Armstrong, who just "put it in the big ring" when it mattered the most. The mellow jonny will always be on your back. A good solid effort by Levi and Vino really helped going up the mountains and clinching stage wins. We had a good lead going into Sunday, but my call for Vino to attack
was to let everybody know that we are for real and sprinters are not. The Green jersey isn't important in the tour and we showed it throughout the real stages of the race.

A special thanks to the tour director Marshall, because this was one of the best tours I have been a part of. The game was awesome and I hope you will take the time to do this next year, Thanks.

The boys are going to have fun tonight (Sunday) and then before you know it, it's back to the drawing board to find a new captain and get Josh's Team a second victory. The time trial is tomorrow. Of the three GC contenders, I would rank it as:

1. Josh's Team - Armstrong, Levi, Vino

2. Los Globeros - Levi, Landis and Azevedo or Rasmussen

3. HPYBNY - Basso, Popo and somone else real slow who will be many minutes behind.

4. Flying K (may get close to HPYBNY) - Levi, Vino and Hincape

Look for Josh's Team to take over the GC lead tomorrow. Scott and Brian will move into the top 10 overall (or close to it) with their good finishes. That will put four of us in or near the top 10 (Ryan, Rife, Scott, and me). Numbers were on our side, but the course was so fast it was tough to get anyone into a successful break. Can't say we didn't try though. Race stayed together through much of it's 25 laps, but with HARD pulls by both Johann and Carney, it kept the racing honest and pretty strung out. With the race winding down, Carney did his usual best in making riders suffer and took two huge pulls on the back stretch with three to go and again with two laps to go. On the final lap - as usually happens - everyone started looking at one another, but didn't want to pull through after Carney's monster efforts and the pack started to swell and bunch up across the road.... Then came Johann. As soon as the situation looked out of our control, Johann pulled through an took a massive turn on the back side of the course. He strung the whole pack out perfectly w/ John, Scott and Rife all in good position for the finale. Johann held his speed into the last corner, launching the three of us towards the line. So, everything looked perfect - except - coming into the final corner, one rider jumped the whole field and gapped us all by 30 yards in the blink of an eye. Hoping he would explode before the finish line, we put our heads down and pushed it all the way to the line. Didn't get him. With an incredibly gutsy move, he had won the race. John held onto 2nd, Scott was right behind in 4th, with Brian taking 7th.
Although we missed out on the win, it was a near perfect finish for the Team.

Johann, Steve, and Josh lined up for the Category 4/5 race later in the day. With some bad luck in Philly the day before, both Johann and Josh were looking for some redemption. With aggressive riding, the three FHR riders were working over the field for another strong finish. After some communication and his success with the move earlier in the day, Johann agreed to lead out Josh for the finale. Great plan, but in corner one of the final lap, Josh was taken out. Both he and Johann were in the front end of the pack - great position to be in, but as they rounded the first corner, Josh found himself sliding across the pavement. Luckily, Josh was able to walk away from the crash - with some road rash that will surely feel great this week - but nothing too serious. Frustrating way to finish the day for the Team (and painful for Josh) - but overall it was another good showing for FH. The results (and better luck) will come...

Saturday Update

Josh and Johann took the trip to Philly Saturday morning to race the Lemon Hill Crit - Located on one of the famous sections of the USPRO Championship Course. In the Cat. 4/5 race, Josh pulled off a very respectable 6th place even though he sat up in the final sprint - AFTER getting rammed by another rider. He was lucky to stay upright, let alone finish 6th. Johann had a strong ride in the Cat 4 race, finishing top 20.

John (me) raced the super dry, super dusty, super fast Hershey's Race for Chocolate Mtn Bike race in the Expert Senior II category. Had a good race today, but unfortunately, so did the guy who won. I entered the woods in second position, but never again saw the first placed rider - he was just motoring (on a singlespeed no less...ugh). I was caught by two riders at the end of the first lap, but was able to drop them both midway through the second, riding the rest of that lap and the third on my own. It was a tight race though, as 3rd and 4th place were within two minutes of me.

Tomorrow we're all heading to Cargas...

JULY 9th, 2005

Faulkner Honda Weekend

Have a weekend full of racing coming up. A little mountain bike racing in Hershey on Saturday, some road action in Lancaster on Sunday.

I think I'll be flying solo in Hershey - should be a good time though. Course is great fun, twisting and turning through 100 acres on Milton Hershey property. If its dry - its fast and a fun. If its wet - its four laps of torture. Looks like it may be dry......Let's hope.

Faulkner Honda Racing will be well represented on Sunday at Cargas - 'D' shaped criterium course near Lancaster. Industrial park loop, but with its nice rise to the Start/Finish, it provides good racing even without the atmostphere...

Reed, Josh and UPenn rider (and new teammate) Johann will represent FHR in the Cat. 4 race - all are riding strong, so look for good results...

Carney, Sanderson, Alex, Rife, and I are in the Cat. 3/4 race - Ryan is nursing a screwed up back, so no racing for him this weekend. Way better for him to heal up now...

Hope we all can avoid the crashes this weekend - Scott was in a great spot last weekend at Marietta, but was taken out of it by some jagg in corner two w/ only two laps to go. Johann was taken out too, for that matter.
